"The windows of my studio open onto a few old maple trees. They were once part of an ancient forest now swallowed by suburban sprawl. Despite the changes, one resident of that lost forest still thrives, the American Crow. Because I occasionally feed them, they seem as aware of my presence as I am of theirs, often calling when I enter my studio. The behaviour of these birds is fascinating, intelligent, social, adaptable and playful

In the depths of winter, when most life is suspended, the only sign of movement is often the crows. When I think about the Island landscape, it seems somewhat incomplete without the presence of at least one of these remarkable creatures." - Richard Vickerson
